Fabric + Care

The finest cotton in the world comes from Egypt and the best weaving mills are in Italy.  As a custom house, we can offer virtually any fabric you desire, including percale, sateen, piquet, linen, wool and cashmere, all of the finest quality. We can also offer organic cotton and cotton linen blends.

For our standard collection, we have chosen 100% Egyptian cotton 231 thread count percale from Italy.  It uses a fine thread that results in a light and soft fabric with a crisp feel. We have used this fabric for the last 8 years and received rave reviews from our most discerning customers.

Thread count is often misunderstood as a measure of quality. It refers to the number of threads both vertical and horizontal on a one inch square of fabric.  Thread count will vary depending upon the type of fabric and yarn. Some manufacturers produce low quality fabric with high thread counts by using 2 ply yarns and multiple picks (the number of yarns inserted into the weft).

Fabric quality depends upon a combination of fiber quality, yarn size, finishing, thread count and construction.  Even with similar quality materials and processes, the ideal thread count is a matter of personal taste. HIgher thread count means a heavier fabric. In a percale, thread count of 180 or more is considered ideal. Our 231 thread count percale comes from a 120 year old Italian mill that uses the best raw materials and finishing techniques to produce a light, soft fabric that is crisp and cool to the touch.

Care Instructions

Cotton and Linen

Cotton and Linen fabrics are washable and should be laundered for the best care and longevity of the product. Many fabrics feel nicer with washed over time. Below is some very simple information to follow.

Wool and Cashmere

Wool and cashmere should be washed for best care and longevity with The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo.
For a complete washing recipe, visit www.thelaundress.com.

Silk

Silk can be washed only using the proper soap such as The Laundress Delicate Wash. For a complete washing recipe, visit www.thelaundress.com.

Stains

Stains are best treated before washing. Apply a liquid stain remover (such as The Laundress Stain Solution) before washing. If there is a tougher stain apply the stain remover and soak before washing. It is best to remove stains with hot water; however, do not use hot water on silk and wool.

Detergents

We recommend a good enzyme non-petroleum detergent (The Laundress Signature Detergent) for washing cotton and linen fabrics. The Laundress Delicate Wash is formulated for silk and The Laundress Wool & Cashmere Shampoo is formulated for wool.

Fabric Softeners

We do not recommend using fabric softener products for any Julia B. products. The cotton and linen get softer and retain the natural beauty as is. Do not use fabric softener on silk, synthetics and wool.

Bleach

We never recommend chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach will weaken any fabric and reduce the lifespan. If bleaching is required, only use oxygen bleach like The Laundress All-Purpose Bleach Alternative which is safe for colors and whites. Never use any bleach on silk, synthetics or wool.

Machine Cleaning

-Pre-treat any stained areas before washing.
-Wash like colors together or only one set of sheets in the load.
-We recommend putting any delicate items/constructions (such as decorative buttons) in a mesh washing bag to protect in the machine.
-Use the delicate cycle for any of the products made of silk with cold water.
-Normal washing cycle and warm water can be used with cotton and linen.

Hand Washing

-Pre-treat any stained areas before washing.
-Pour room temperature water into a basin with the item(s) to wash and detergent.
-Agitate the water and detergent with our hands. -Soak for ½ hour (we do not recommend soaking silk for longer).
-Rinse well.
*We recommend hand washing items that are embellished or embroidered and silk, wool, and cashmere

Drying

Most damage occurs in the dryer vs. the washer. We recommend line/air drying. Otherwise, if using the dryer use a low heat low tumble cycle. It is best if items are removed before completely dry to hang to finish. Delicates such as wool, cashmere and silk should never go in the dryer. Wools should be laid flat to dry in shape - do not hang. Lay silk flat or hang to dry. Do not hang silk in direct sunlight while drying.

Ironing

Ironing is easiest and gentle on fabrics when the item is damp. Silk and rayon/polyester should be ironed on a low heat. Ironing these fabrics inside out is always a good idea. When ironing monograms or other detailed embroidery, iron from the back side and on top of a towel. This ensures that the relief of the embroidery isn’t flattened.
Julia B. products do not really need starch, if you do use starch use a natural cornstarch like The Laundress Stiffen-Up. *Never starch silk. Starch is for cotton and linen and sizing is for rayon and polyester.

Storing

Fabrics should always be stored clean (washed) in a dry place. (Attics and basements are the worst) Do not store in plastic; cotton bags or acid free paper is best to avoid bugs and deterioration. Also, never store cotton and linen with starch as this causes yellowing.

Dry Cleaning

Dry cleaning chemicals are not good for you or Julia B. Fabrics. If you like to have your linens professionally pressed, take them for pressing only.

Caution

There are some everyday products, such as face creams and hair products that can discolor and or permanently stain fabric.
